IN HONOR OF SONNY…

It is with a heavy heart that we must relate the passing of long-time Memphis Crisis Center volunteer Ralph “Sonny” Shankman on Tuesday morning July 17.  In 2006, through his persistent efforts, Sonny was instrumental in getting funding restored to the Memphis Crisis Center. If not for these efforts, we would probably not be here today. Sonny served the Memphis Crisis Center for more than 30 years and was always our champion in the community. He delighted in the friendships he made at the Memphis Crisis Center and we delighted in his humor, his outrageous style, and his love of the people we serve. In 2010, the Memphis Crisis Center established the “Sonny Shankman Lifetime Achievement Award” in his honor for volunteers who exhibit exceptional service and lifelong dedication. It is with both sadness at his passing and gratitude for his life that we bid Sonny a fond farewell.  You will be missed friend.
